The risk of an unconscious reality

In a recent post I want a better world for my son , Antonio Galindo commented that humanity has become desensitized because of the poisoning of information, which Alfons Cornella called infoxication . I matizaría saying that humanity more than insensitive, it is becoming increasingly unconscious, that although this is not a new phenomenon, effectively present information society faces new situations people have not yet clear how face.

Antonio's reflection brought me to head a to TED conference of Daniel Goleman The father of the concept Emotional Intelligence, in which he wondered why most of the time we are not more compassionate and just attributed to lack of awareness , understood as non-abstract cognitive status that allows interaction, understanding and partnership with external stimuli, so-called reality. Goleman was saying that many times we fail to perceive what is happening right under our noses because we spend most of the time absorbed in our thoughts. And that's why we do not repair the opportunities before us to help others in need. I would add that no repair, no repair even how to help ourselves.

Using an open interpretation of the concept external stimuli, human evolution can be understood as something of a race to reach an ever wider reality, ie to increase the area from which you can receive external stimuli. Language, writing, printing, radio, television and telephone, among others, represent milestones in the race. The appearance of each of these means, if we call it, reality has allowed it not only larger but also more complex in the sense that they give people the ability to filter stimuli (I choose with whom I speak, who write, read or post to tune channel) thus giving them the ability to model reality.

But none of these methods by itself has had as much impact as the Internet to play in enabling people to increase and shape their reality. Only fifteen years ago all the people who lived in the same country or region we read the same newspapers, heard the same radio and watch the same TV channels. And the mass media was always unidirectional. The phone can communicate with people far away but does not significantly increase the magnitude of our contacts. Today Internet the current social Internet, allows people to communicate openly and massively bidirectionally. Allows a significant part of our reality in terms of time spent is virtual. And let this virtual reality modeling to virtually construct.

In such a complex reality it is difficult to define what is consciousness. We might be tempted to think of this virtual reality as the ultimate distraction to the true reality of physics. I once read something along these lines Sanchez-Drago . But even if we adopt a view so extreme, it is clear that the virtual world with its myriad of sources in real time facilitates the dispersion, so we spent a lot of time wandering from one idea to another without going never enough in any of them. That is, the absorption in pure state.

far I have not any certainty on the subject. But as Daniel Goleman notes and I believe, compassion and many other important things depend on our consciousness, we must find a personal and collective response to this issue to avoid getting into this terrible world that wants to spare Antonio Galindo your child.
